Child Sponsorship Brazil
Brazil Child Sponsorship
Although the Brazilian economy is the most developed in Latin America and the seventh in the world, the poor distribution of wealth means that there are regions that are far poorer and backward than others, especially in the countries of the Northeast of the country. This presents worrying levels of illiteracy, infant mortality and low per capita income. The situation of extreme poverty mainly affects childhood. Families living in the favelas of large cities cannot provide education to their children, who are therefore, forced to spend their days on the streets, without the protection of their parents and at the mercy of drug traffickers and prostitutes. Child sexual violence is increasingly becoming a phenomenon of dramatic scope; data reported by the Brazilian Secretariat for Human Rights claim that public bodies record on average three cases of sexual violence against children a minute (SDH, 2014).
In Brazil, Aleimar, through Child Sponsorship, provides assistance and support to families living in precarious situations, in dilapadated shacks, in neighbourhoods oppressed by crime, drugs and violence against minors, sometimes it is about abuse even in the family. Thanks to the Child Sponsorship, we follow the children and families, offering them a psychological accompaniment program aimed at overcoming daily difficulties; we supply basic necessities, finance medical care, specialist visits and home renovation.
Starting again together
The Project, through the Child Sponsorship program, aims to help numerous families living in situations of serious discomfort in the Colonia Aleixo and Belavista districts, in Manaus in the Amazon. The Aleixo colony, built around an ancient leper colony, is still today a district in which poverty and degradation continue to create social problems including delinquency, drugs and unemployment. The Belavista neighbourhood (Puraquequara), built on the other side of Lake Aleixo, has the same problems as the colony, with the aggravating factor of the lack of connections with the city and of health and education facilities adequate to the number of people living there.
The Sponsorship allows 65 children of these families to continue their education, up to university: students who demonstrate intellectual abilities suitable for professional schools or university faculties are given the opportunity to receive scholarships. In exchange for this great opportunity, the students commit themselves to donate their free time in the various welfare activities aimed at the approximately 350 children of the ECAE social centers that Aleimar started in collaboration with the parishes of the neighbourhoods of Aleixo and Belavista.

A new dawn
The Child Sponsorship allows us to help 25 children who come from families living in situations of serious economic, family and social hardship in the Alvorada neighbourhood, in the Amazon. This district is home to many immigrants from the poorest areas of the country and the forest, landed in search of a job and a better future. Despite the various interventions aimed at improving the living conditions of the population, Alvorada remains a degraded neighbourhood, oppressed by crime, violence, drugs and arms trafficking.
